The term prostitution refers to the exchange of sexual services for remuneration on a punctual, explicit and previously negotiated basis. Prostitution is mostly carried out by women, although there are also male prostitutes. In 2013, according to the proposed law punishing clients of prostitution, 99% of these clients were men. In 2016, the number of prostitutes was estimated at 30,000 in France. However, despite its reputation as the oldest profession in the world, prostitution has never been unanimous. Sometimes tolerated, sometimes rejected, it has nevertheless evolved over time, taking different forms and different appellations. However, it is regulated and framed by laws that have also evolved a lot over time.

Prostitution in Paris, a noble beginning

The origin of prostitution in Paris probably dates back to the Christian conversion of the Frankish king Clovis in 496, given the very important role played by the church in its expansion. As incredible as it may seem, prostitution in Paris was exploited by the Catholic clergy for a rather noble cause: to avoid slippages in a society plagued by rape. For the most part single mothers, raped virgins, widows or repudiated women, the prostitutes of Paris had a very special social responsibility, that of protecting marriages from adultery, and the so-called virtuous women against rape that became very common at the time. However, like all the major capitals of Europe, Paris has long adopted a rather complex attitude towards the oldest profession in the world. It is generally reduced to periods of tolerance followed almost immediately by periods of repression, apart from the exceptional case of lupanars, these brothels still called Bodel which offered prostitution services. They were tolerated for a relatively long period of time until they were banned on April 13, 1946 by the so-called Marthe Richard law. Since then, prostitution legislation has undergone quite complex developments.

The evolution of legislation against Prostitution

Already in 1949, the France had acceded to the United Nations Convention for the Suppression of the Traffic in Persons and of the Exploitation for Prostitution of Others. However, it was not until 1960 that it was ratified. However, this ratification did not change things, because the violation of the rights of prostitutes continued, including police harassment that led in 1975 to protest movements of prostituted people in Paris as well as in several other cities. These movements have contributed greatly to the evolution of the situation of prostituted persons, and in 1994 we will even see the abolition of the penalization for cohabitation with prostituted persons as well as the penalization for passive solicitation. This last penalization will be reinstated later in 2003 by the Sarkozy law, which was in turn repealed in April 2016. It has simply been replaced by a harsher prostitution law on clients. Indeed, the law provides that the act of soliciting, accepting or obtaining, in exchange for remuneration or a promise of remuneration, sexual relations from a minor who engages in prostitution, including occasionally, is punishable by three years' imprisonment and a fine of 45,000 euros. The same penalties shall apply to soliciting, accepting or obtaining in exchange for remuneration or a promise of remuneration for sexual relations from a person who engages in prostitution, including occasionally, when that person is particularly vulnerable, apparent or known to its author. But, the law doesn't just penalize the customer; the prostitute also incurs penalties, including soliciting and sexual exhibition. In addition, pimping defined as the exploitation of prostitution by a third party is also punished. French case law states that the pimp refers, for example, to a hotelier who provides prostitutes with rooms to carry out their activities or who helps them launder money from prostitution. It can also be a simple tolerance to prostitution as was the case in 1973 of the restaurateur who tolerated prostitutes to work on the terrace of his establishment.

Historic districts

If Paris is reputed to be the capital of all pleasures, prostitution has contributed a lot to forge this fame. Prostitution in Paris is historically linked to certain districts, the most famous of which are the districts of Pigalle and Montmartre, or the Halles de Paris nicknamed clitoris de Paris thanks to its streets, some of which have evocative names to the present day: rue Tire-Vit (later rue tire-Bourdin) or rue Gratte-Cul, near the First Saint-Denis Gate. But, with the recent law on soliciting, prostitution in Paris has changed its mapping.

Prostitution in Paris, a new cartography

Welcome to Paris with its new whore districts! From now on, you will meet them in the Bois de Vincennes where prostitutes, mostly of African origin, work at home in their vans for a better comfort of their customers. They have to pay between 20 and 50 euros. From Vincennes to Boulogne, the rates do not change, but this time the customer is welcomed behind makeshift tents. Here, we find mostly creatures of all sex from South America, for the majority of Brazil. But, those who do not like the woods can always go to Strasbourg Saint-Denis. They will be received by girls in studios set up for this purpose, probably on the top floor of a building. However, it will cost a little more, between 30 and 70 euros depending on the hours, the mood or sometimes even the head of the customer. The only problem is that here, all the girls are French. Towards the Porte Saint-Martin, the choice is between girls of Chinese, Mongolian or Romanian origin for rates ranging from 40 to 60 euros. These rates can go up to 100 euros if you want to spend the night with prostitutes. Sevastopol reserves African women and Barbès along the boulevard at the foot of the buildings. We are generally satisfied for 20 to 50 euros. A wider possibility is also offered to the Marshals where you can meet African women, but also North Africans and Romanians, leaving for a price between 20 and 40 euros. The Escort, the new form of prostitution that is gaining ground in Paris

With the development of the internet, we are now witnessing a multiplication of Escort agencies that attract many young girls in search of profit, pleasure and experience. But what is it really about? The term Escort refers to this category of prostitutes who do not practice on the public highway, the first contact being made by internet or telephone. The Escort can very well designate a man (in this case, we speak of Escort-boy) as a woman (in this case, we speak rather of Escort-girl). This term also refers to an accompaniment service that may or may not involve sexual services. Some clients often elderly or widowed use the service of an Escort just to distract themselves in the company of a pretty nana. The Escorts are mostly independent, although some are employed by specialized agencies. The client can move to the Escort or have it moved to his home, or to any other place of his choice. Whether in a hotel, at a wedding or on any occasion, the guest can just decide to impress his friends or colleagues for a business dinner. In these cases, the customer must first inform the Escort of his intentions. For the promotion of their service, Escorts place classified ads on dating sites or adult sites.

In conclusion…

In short, it must be said that prostitution in Paris, born of the Catholic Church's desire to protect families from adultery and girls from rape, has evolved a lot over time. A rather picturesque history will be born from the first Bodel of the Catholic clergy to the adult sites of the net, despite the abolitionist currents that have greatly threatened the oldest profession in the world. Even if adult sites tend to dominate the activity, they are now very numerous, these neighborhoods with whores of paris. Rates will vary according to the customer's wishes. Image Source:
